Dementia – Admiral Nurse Service

Coventry and Rugby have an Admiral nurse service in conjunction with the NHS Coventry and Rugby CCG, Dementia UK and Coventry University.

“The Admiral Nurse is there for me and has time to listen, in contrast to other services who do not have the time to listen. This is the hardest time of my life and at times when I feel I can’t carry on the Admiral Nurse gives me the ‘care’ and motivation to believe ‘I can do this’. I would really struggle without her.”

About the Admiral Nurse Service

The Admiral Nurse Service is set up in partnership with Dementia UK.

The Admiral Nurse service is available to people and families living in Coventry, Rugby and North Warwickshire who are providing care and support for a person with a diagnosis or likely diagnosis of dementia and as a result the carer/s are experiencing complex problems.

Our team of 6 Specialist provide the specialist dementia support that families need – through psychological support, expert advice and information to help families understand and cope with their thoughts, feelings and behaviour and to adapt to the changing situation of living with dementia.

We use a range of interventions to help people live positively, develop skills to improve communication and maintain family relationships. We also work with others in the in the health and social care system so that the needs of families are addressed in a coordinated way.

The Admiral Nurse Service provides a comprehensive assessment of need for the carer/ family and delivers evidence-based practical, clinical and emotional support interventions to reduce or eliminate identified issues, extending support to help the families affected by dementia improve their quality of life.

Admiral Nurses support families through life-changing transitions from diagnosis to end of life that can be very challenging to cope with. Admiral Nurses provide individualised support and coping strategies during these times until the situation has stabilised.

They play a unique role in care management by joining up the different parts of the health and social care system, so the physical, psychological and social needs of family carers and people with dementia can be addressed in a co-ordinated way.
