About Podiatry
Podiatrists in our specialist team can diagnose and manage a range of foot pathologies and presentations including ulceration, in-grown toenails, skin and nail complications and musculoskeletal foot conditions
We aim to prevent, eradicate and/or control foot conditions and disability, through evidence-based primary, secondary and tertiary interventions and as part of clinical pathways and Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs)

Coventry Guidance
NHS Podiatry in Coventry
Where the service is based:
- The UHCW Community podiatry service is based at City of Coventry Health Centre on Stoney Stanton Road, CV1 4FS
We also provide clinics at:
- Tile Hill Health Centre , Jardine Crescent
- Willenhall Health Centre, Remembrance Road
- Longford Health Centre, Longford Road
- Home visiting service – This is for patients who are bedbound or strictly housebound only. We can arrange ambulance transport for patients to attend clinic who are able to leave the house but need assistance
The standard service hours are 8.45-16.45 Monday to Friday with extended clinic times on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8.00 -19.00
Services provided:
The following treatments are available to patients fitting the acceptance criteria on assessment of their podiatric needs:
- Wound Management for foot ulcerations in Diabetes and other long-term medical conditions
- Callus and Corn removal and toe nail cutting for patients whose feet are at risk of complications
- Nail surgery procedures (total or partial) under local anaesthetic with or without phenolisation to patients of 10 years old and above.
- Provision of functional or palliative foot orthoses (insoles) and rehabilitation exercise program
- Ultrasound guided steroid injection where appropriate as part of an agreed treatment plan
Exclusion criteria:
- No-low risk patients requesting toenail cutting and callus/corn treatment
- *No-low risk patients with MSK complaints other than plantar fasciitis, first MTPJ OA, hallux valgus, Morton’ s Neuroma
- Patients already referred to Physiotherapy/Orthopaedics for the same condition
- Patients who require sedation or general anaesthetic to enable treatment to be given
- Provision and modification of footwear (please refer to surgical appliances at UHCW)
- Verrucae (see notes below);
- Assessment and treatment of finger nails

South Warwickshire Guidance
NHS Podiatry in Warwickshire
The Diabetes and Tissue Viability Team, work in the community and as part of the Multi-disciplinary Diabetes Footcare Team (MDFT)
The service supports people diagnosed with Diabetes and/or Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). People with Diabetes who have active, high or moderate foot risk according to NICE Guideline 19 (2015) and patients with PAD are at risk of developing severe foot complications
Patients with neuropathy and/or impaired circulation or one or more risk factors, should be referred to the Podiatry Department for triage, screening, advice and care plan
Active foot problems including ulceration with or without infection or suspected Charcot arthropathy, should be referred immediately for urgent triage, assessment and treatment. (National Wound Care Strategy Foot Ulcer Recommendations 2023)

The Podiatry Rheumatology Team run specialist clinics for patients with an active Rheumatology or Connective tissue disorder. These patients are usually under the care of a Rheumatology consultant and should be referred to the department for triage and screening.
The Podiatry Neurology Team offer assessment and advice to patients with Neurological conditions. Aiming to provide lower limb stability, mobility and the prevention falls. Offering footwear advice and simple orthotics if required.
A specialist minor surgical procedure provided in the community setting for the treatment of ingrowing toenails in both children and adults. This may involve permanent removal of the ingrown toenail using a local anaesthetic.
The Podiatry MSK Team provide advice and / or treatment for foot related Musculoskeletal problems. Children and adults with pain or deformity in their feet or legs stemming from muscle, bone, joint and related soft tissue problems should be referred to the department for triage and screening.
Podiatry care is provided on medical and foot health need
Packages of care will be provided following assessment people with:
- Diabetes at active, high and moderate foot risk According to NICE Guideline 19 (2015)
- Mental health problems affecting ability to selfcare
- Neurological or neuropathic lower limb & stability issues
- Peripheral arterial disease
- Rheumatoid/connective tissue disorders (not osteoarthritis)
- Lung disease
- Kidney disease – Stage 4 & 5 (formally End Stage Renal Failure)
- Foot ulceration associated with a long-term condition
- End of Life Care
- Infected ingrowing toe nails
- Musculoskeletal conditions of the foot
Please note:
Individuals who require routine nail care, will be advised regarding self-care and signposted to other agencies. Our service is not based on any means testing criteria
Patients who attend GP or outpatients will be offered an appointment at one of our community podiatry clinics. Should they choose not to travel, despite being able to, we are unable to offer an alternative to a clinic appointment
