A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue wall.
Refer to Paediatric Surgery when the diagnosis is made.
There is no lower age limit for referral, and all babies and children will be considered for prompt surgical intervention. There is a small but important risk of bowel strangulation if the hernia becomes irreducible.
