Red eye (children)

A red eye can be alarming, but can be a sign of a minor eye condition, such as conjunctivitis or a burst blood vessel.

A child with a red eye should be referred if there is no response to topical antibiotics within a week.

The differential diagnosis includes uveitis, glaucoma, viral keratitis and sight-threatening allergic conjunctivitis.
