Red eye (children)

  

A red eye can be alarming, but can be a sign of a minor eye condition, such as conjunctivitis or a burst blood vessel.


Interim Referral Advice from February until 1 April 2024

Ophthalmology referrals will not be triaged or processed by the Referral Support Service during February and March

Referrals should be made DIRECTLY to the provider during this period

Referral queries should be directed to Advice & Guidance

Red Eye

A child with a red eye should be referred if there is no response to topical antibiotics within a week.

The differential diagnosis includes uveitis, glaucoma, viral keratitis and sight-threatening allergic conjunctivitis.
