Urinary catheter management advice for Primary Care


About Urinary Catheters
  • Urinary Catheters are always uncomfortable
  • Urinary Catheters frequently bypass (Consider either Solifenacin 10mg OD or Mirabegron 50mg OD if ongoing bypassing despite balloon deflation)

These are non-urgent problems and do not require hospital assessment

Troubleshooting and General Guidance
  • Ensure patient has a G-strap/fixation device
  • Ensure patient is drinking plenty
  • Blocked urinary catheter: flush/washout or change completely
