Hydrocoele (adult)

A hydrocele denotes a pathological accumulation of serous fluid in a body cavity.

History

Gradual onset scrotal swelling, non-traumatic.

Examination

Translucent non-tender swelling , swelling entirely within scrotum (not extending  to groin which may point towards hernia than hydrocoele)

Investigation

Ultra-sound

Referral
  • If ultra-sound confirms hydrocoele, refer to urologist only if symptomatic and patient wants surgery.
  • If ultra-sound shows an associated hernia, consider referral to general surgery (subject to low priority procedures policy).

PLEASE DO NOT ASPIRATE IN GENERAL PRACTICE.
