About Primary Care Dermatology – Coventry & Warwickshire

Primary Care Dermatology (PCD) has been commissioned by Coventry and Warwickshire ICB, to help tackle the long waits currently facing some patients referred to secondary care

The service is being provided by the Integrated Primary Care (IPC) on behalf of the four GP Federations working in partnership across Coventry and Warwickshire

Primary Care Dermatology will provide a single point of access for routine dermatology conditions and treatments that cannot be managed in Primary Care

This is a triage service and is consultant led and delivered by GP’s who have extra training and experience in dermatology in primary or secondary care

Inclusion Criteria
  • Patient over age of 16 years
  • Registered with a Coventry or Warwickshire GP
  • Management of mild (not responding to treatment) or moderate forms of common rashes such as eczema, psoriasis, lichen planus, urticarial and fungal infections
  • Benign lesions for non-cosmetic reasons practices including dermoscopy and cryotherapy for warts*
  • Premalignant skin lesions such as *Actinic Keratosis or *Bowen’s disease
  • Low risk BCCs on trunks and limbs
  • Acne (including prescribing of Isotretinoin) excluding patients with co-morbidities, special educational needs & disabilities (please submit with recent blood tests including FBC, liver function & cholesterol)
  • Minor surgical procedures as clinically indicated*
  • Conditions of hair, scalp – such as cysts, dermatitis and lesions
  • Conditions of nails such as ingrown & fungal infection
  • Genital Dermatology such as lichen sclerosis, balanitis & fungal infections (excluding sexual health conditions)

*as per ICB policy

(Please note ICB Prior Approval Policy where treatment of benign skin lesions, with no risk of malignancy or infection, is considered to be cosmetic)

Exclusion Criteria
  • 2 week wait cancer referrals (Urgent Suspected Cancer USC) 
  • High risk BCC (any above clavicle or >2cm diameter below should be referred to secondary care with 2WW for some on special sites)
  • Telangiectasia
  • Keloid scarring
  • Hirsutism
  • DMARDS/ Biologics
  • Patch testing
  • Leg ulcers – please refer to leg ulcer pathway
  • Acute infections needing inpatient treatment e.g. cellulitis
  • Severe inflammatory skin disease requiring non-conventional therapy.
  • Specialised skin surgery
  • Life threatening skin disease
  • Non-malignant lymphoedema
  • HIV; infectious disease of the skin; leprosy
  • Photodynamic therapy; UV light therapy; laser treatment.
  • Vascular Eczema, Vasculitis
  • Genetic Dermatology
Referral

Coventry and Warwickshire patients can access community dermatology services via a referral from a Coventry and Warwickshire GP using e-RS

GPs can access the referral form via EMIS
