Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy

Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy is not funded for facial blushing or facial sweating.

This commissioning policy has been produced in order to provide and ensure equity, consistency and clarity relating to the approach to Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy by the Integrated Care Board (ICB)

The policy reflects the relative lack of high-quality research data available to support the use of these treatments

Facial blushing is often a result of social phobia and is encouraged by an over-active sympathetic nervous system

There is limited evidence suggesting Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy can control the occurrence of facial blushing and sweating, however, the patient may experience adverse side effects

Please also see related policy; ICB’s Policy for Hyperhidrosis (excess sweating) of the palms or axillae Treatments

All treatments for Facial blushing and/or sweating are not routinely commissioned.
