Support for patients with personality disorder


A person may experience some of the following with Personality Disorder:

  • intense and extreme emotions
  • feeling as if the rest of the world doesn’t understand them and that they are alienated and alone
  • difficulty keeping and maintaining relationships
  • repeating unhelpful patterns of behaviour
  • feeling that their problems have become part of who they are
  • finding it hard to focus on more than one thing at a time
  • ways of thinking that are disorganised or disordered
  • self-harming to cope with painful emotions
  • using drugs and/or alcohol to cope with painful feelings
  • difficulty controlling impulses
  • risk-taking activities e.g. gambling, dangerous driving
  • having suicidal thoughts and feelings
