Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system.

  • Transient loss of consciousness/possible seizure
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Headache
  • Tremor and Parkinson’s disease
  • Visual disturbance/diplopia/suspected optic neuritis
  • Transient ischaemic attack
  • Focal weakness
  • Giddiness/dizziness/imbalance

Coventry Guidance  

Conditions covered by Neurology at UHCW

  • All general neurology
  • Seizures/Epilepsy
  • Movement Disorders, eg dystonia, tremor, ataxia, Parkinson’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis or other CNS Inflammation
  • Neuropathies / Myopathies
  • Refractory Headaches / Migraine / Cluster Headache
  • Genetic Neurological Disorders (but not for genetic counselling)
  • Non-central (ie. non-ENT) vertigo

Epilepsy Service

Epilepsy Clinic City of Coventry Health Centre May 2021 (Epilepsy Clinic – Neurosciences – City of Coventry Health Centre – RKB)

Suspected or diagnosed epilepsy

Neurology are not able to accommodate all consultants at UHCW and are hosting epilepsy clinics at CoCHC.

This service will be available to refer to from 14/05/2021 for the foreseeable future.

The service mirrors the same service at University Hospital Coventry site so please select both sites when referring patients.

Please advise patient to bring an eye witness to the appointment

Exclusions

  • Children under 16
  • Patients suffering from vasovagal symptoms and simple faints

Pre Referral Investigations

  • Lying and standing blood pressure
  • Routine bloods
  • Blood glucose
  • ECG
  • Good history (witness account)

Referral to Neurology is generally NOT appropriate for:

  • Established Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME unless new neurological symptoms and signs
  • Headaches without red flags not tried on first line treatments +/- CT head (not MRI)
  • Elderly patients with non-specific dizziness but no neurological signs
