Mouth Ulcers and Glossitis


Mouth ulcers are painful sores that appear in the mouth.


Causes include trauma, aphthous ulcers, candida, anaemia, auto-immune conditions, malignancy.


Treat any obvious cause and rule out anaemia.


The following should be referred directly as a Two Week Wait, rather than using the Referral Support Service.

    • unexplained mouth ulcer present for more than three weeks
    • unexplained oral mass present for more than three weeks
    • other unexplained and persistent oral lesions
