In consideration of testing patients for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) consider these stages to aid guide you in your decision making.

Please note Coventry is a high prevalence area with almost 3 in 1000 of the population but it is not currently our policy to test all general medical admissions therefore these stages should aid in the guidance of your clinical judgement.

Consent must be gained and documented in the same manner as all tests in line with GMC Good Practice. HIV counselling from specific trained personnel is no longer required as this is no longer a palliative diagnosis but a manageable condition, especially when detected early.
